About Haven
Haven is a student-run community health group at Rice University. We set up at health fairs around Houston and offer free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings to anyone who walks up. No appointment, no insurance, no cost.
A screening on its own doesn’t help much if you have nowhere to take the result. So we do two things at once: we check your numbers and explain what they mean in plain language, and we help you find a clinic that will actually see you afterward, whatever your insurance or immigration status.
For Rice students, Haven is a way to work with patients directly rather than watching from the back of a room. Volunteers take the readings, have the conversations, and log genuine clinical hours.
What the logo means
Two trees arch into a circle around a heart with a pulse line, and a cupped hand holds the whole thing. Growth, care, and shelter. A haven is somewhere you’re taken in without being asked to prove you belong.
What we are not
Haven is not a clinic and not a medical provider. Our screenings are screenings, not diagnoses. We don’t prescribe, treat, or keep records of anyone’s health information. If a reading looks concerning, we’ll tell you plainly that it’s worth seeing a doctor, and help you find one.
